This review examines the educational app Oz Phonics 1, which is designed to support foundational phonemic awareness and letter-sound relationships. The app aligns with various standards, including US Common Core State Standards: RF/K/2a, RF/K/2d, RF/K/3a, and RF/K/3b, with a particular focus on short vowels.

Oz Phonics 1 comprises ten exercises and two reference screens dedicated to sounds, providing a structured approach to early reading and spelling skills. The initial emphasis is on auditory discrimination, encouraging students to listen carefully before visualizing the letters, thus emphasizing phonemic awareness.

The first activity, Sound Match, facilitates the ability to differentiate and match identical sounds through a game involving a selection from 28 phonemes. This task establishes a critical auditory foundation for subsequent reading skills.

In the Odd One Out activities—covering beginning sounds and rhymes—students identify the item that differs from others by sound. Notably, some words used are nonsense words, adding a layer of complexity that encourages careful listening and memory.

The Phonics Sounds Reference screen emphasizes listening to pronunciation over letter names initially, aiding students in recognizing sounds within words. It demonstrates key concepts such as the /k/ sound in ‘quiz,’ the ending /ks/ in ‘six,’ and the /ee/ sound in ‘sunny.’ Additionally, it introduces the voiced /th/ sound with visual cues—an underlined representation in the absence of a pictorial).

Vowel recognition is addressed through activities requiring close listening, given that vowels often present more difficulty than consonants. For example, the silent 'h' in ‘honest’ is explained as beginning with the short /ŏ/ sound. These exercises help students distinguish subtle differences in initial sounds.

The Missing Sounds activities challenge students to identify absent phonemes by listening to partial words and selecting from a set of tiles representing individual sounds. This includes missing beginning, middle, and end sounds, with particular attention to the difficulty associated with middle sounds.

Sound Match exercises feature visible letters; consonants are distinguished by black color, vowels by red. The matching game encourages quick paired selections that are visually represented by playful animated elements.

The Phonics Touch Pad offers an interactive space where students click on tiles to hear sounds, allowing them to experiment with forming simple two-, three-, and four-letter words. This activity promotes active phoneme manipulation and vocabulary building.

The app also includes assessments such as a Vowel Test to measure recognition of vowel sounds and a comprehensive Phonics Sound Test covering all 28 sounds, highlighting multiple letter representations for certain phonemes like /k/ ('c', 'k', 'q'). It also clarifies the different roles of 'y' depending on its usage—as a consonant or vowel—using color cues for differentiation.
