This review examines the educational app Oz Phonics 1, which is designed to support foundational phonemic awareness and letter-sound relationships. Vowel recognition is addressed through activities requiring close listening, given that vowels often present more difficulty than consonants. For example, the silent 'h' in ‘honest’ is explained as beginning with the short /ŏ/ sound. These exercises help students distinguish subtle differences in initial sounds.

The Missing Sounds activities challenge students to identify absent phonemes by listening to partial words and selecting from a set of tiles representing individual sounds. This includes missing beginning, middle, and end sounds, with particular attention to the difficulty associated with middle sounds.

Sound Match exercises feature visible letters; consonants are distinguished by black color, vowels by red. The matching game encourages quick paired selections that are visually represented by playful animated elements.

The Phonics Touch Pad offers an interactive space where students click on tiles to hear sounds, allowing them to experiment with forming simple two-, three-, and four-letter words. This activity promotes active phoneme manipulation and vocabulary building.

The app also includes assessments such as a Vowel Test to measure recognition of vowel sounds and a comprehensive Phonics Sound Test covering all 28 sounds, highlighting multiple letter representations for certain phonemes like /k/ ('c', 'k', 'q').
